Rome is home to the oldest Jewish community in Europe, living continuously in the city since the second century BCE — predating the destruction of the Second Temple. The Roman Jewish Ghetto, established in 1555, remains the symbolic heart of the community, and its narrow streets are today filled with kosher restaurants serving the famous Roman-Jewish cuisine.

The Great Synagogue of Rome (Tempio Maggiore), with its distinctive square dome, was completed in 1904 and houses the Jewish Museum of Rome. The community follows its own ancient Italian rite.

In the Ghetto and beyond you'll find kosher restaurants, bakeries, and shops, several synagogues, and mikvahs. Browse them all on Jewish Compass.
