Venice gave the world the very word "ghetto": in 1516 the Venetian Republic confined its Jews to a foundry district (getto) in the Cannaregio sestiere, creating the first ghetto in history. Within its cramped quarters the community built several remarkable synagogues, layered into the upper floors of the buildings.
The Venetian Ghetto today is a moving heritage site, with its historic synagogues, the Jewish Museum, and a small living community.
